The full paving system is up to 10 to 12 inches thick and in some cases a sub base is also installed. Excavation is often required to remove soft soils and install the gravel base to accommodate for the finished elevation. With proper installation, weeds do not grow in between paver joints. With 6-8″ of compacted gravel underneath the pavers, weeds will not grow under the pavers.Â
Often, paving stones are installed improperly without the required compacted, gravel base. If the pavers are installed with out a proper gravel base, sinking occurs and the pavers will become uneven. In most cases of sinking and uneven pavers, no gravel base or an insufficient gravel base has been installed. Some contractors will skip installing a base completely. Installing the correct thickness of gravel base is a critical element to the function of the interlocking paving system.
Other critical elements of the interlocking paving system include, compaction, grading, tight interlocking, joint sand and edging restraint. If any one of the critical elements are skipped, the interlocking pavers will not function properly. An interlocking paver contractor should provide a detailed quotation with thickness of materials specified to be installed.
